Rough draft

these are probably my most visually strongest pages within the work. Though unfortunately i was not able to fully do the colour/pattern elements within the finished work this is the best rough representation of it i have currently done.

Notably at first there was ment to be a bit more blackwork, this later changed to using more lines, than thicker lines. This combined with slightly coloured dot tone and spot colour.

Certain colours in this were intended to not be outlined, such as red, purposely invoking a risographed feeling.

Think Sin city toned down a few notches.

 

This was a part of the comic I retooled dispute it being visually strong, this early on it was a bit too forward in it's reveal, I thought that it needed a bit more softening. Also looking back on it, the first page might have good concept but it always felt a little awkward in it's delivery.

 

 
This is where the "High contrast" sin city-esque style comes in a lot more, though it was more of a stylistic way to infer atmosphere.

This page was actually cut, due to the fact it was more based around the mothers perspective, though originally the Hospital sequence was meant to be longer, and displaying Maria struggling to get back into a normal life.

  

 

This was meant to highlight the valley of what Maria is feeling, and what is reality on first read and on second read say that her ability is kind of that "there and isn't" kind of entity.

Though, in the end product the inferred death loop is quite vague.

Also in true surrealist fashion, this was a dream i had.

So, with Marias surrealist atmosphere probably the most direct thing i could ever do was make her travel though a mirror. Taking queues from "Orphee" and "blood of a poet"

Though travelling through mirrors is in no way a new concept, (and has really more of a footnote in Maria's characterization) it was directly influenced by this.
